Between 1973 and 1989, he worked in the road haulage industry. In 1989, an opportunity arose for him to become Managing Editor of Christian Focus Publications, a role that he enjoyed for several years. In that same year, he married Katie.
Although involved in Christian work he continued to sense a call to Christian ministry and in 2001 he began studying at the Free Church College in Edinburgh. There he discovered exceptionally competent theological professors and enjoyed initiating lifelong friendships with his fellow students, most of whom are now colleagues in the ministry of the Free Church.
Malcolm was minister of the Free Church on Scalpay in the Outer Hebrides from April 2004 to August 2009. In the following month, he began his ministry in Greyfriars and Stratherrick.
