National Day of Prayer - Thankfulness

This article by Rona Matheson, Chair of the Women for Mission Group, is the third in a four-part series to coincide with the National Day of Prayer on the 30th November.  On this day of prayer, how can we encourage one another? The Bible instructs us to be thankful in all situations. Are you burdened or troubled, looking on our nation and this world with a heavy heart? The old Stornoway Town Council coat of arms bore the text “God's Providence is our Inheritance”, reminding all that our times are in His providence and we are entirely dependent on Him.As I viewed this text on entering the Nicholson Institute in Stornoway recently, I was thankful that in our secular nation this motto was still on display. My prayer was that all who came through the school doors would be able to say with thankfulness and assurance, “God’s Providence is our Inheritance”. It is by His grace that God brings us into His inheritance. What an incredible truth it is that God works all things according to His will. God uses everything that happens in our lives for our good and brings us into an inheritance that never fades. Thankfully our inheritance depends not on our works but on the finished work of Christ.Approaching our National Day of Prayer, we have much to focus on for the local and the global church, for our communities, workplaces, education and caring facilities. We could be in danger of being insincere like the Pharisees who were only thankful they were not like others. As we consider thankfulness let's look first at our own hearts. Are we thankful above all else that we have been brought into a glorious inheritance secured for us by the blood of our wonderful saviour Jesus? Let's not just give thanks for answered prayers, miracles seen, provisions given, but that our names are written in the book of life.Thankful hearts lead to praise and there is only one worthy of our praise. “Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. “ Eph 5:19 God honouring thankfulness is consistent through all circumstances; we can only do this trusting in the sure promise of our inheritance. Wherever we are on our National Day of Prayer, whether we gather in great or small numbers let us be united in thankfulness, stirring us to greater praises of our God. “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.” Ps 100.
